Simulating the Effects of Static Loads on a Transtibial Prosthetic’s Major Components Made of Composite Materials Modeled on SolidWorks
Domenech Pineiro, Carlos M.
The purpose of this design project was to investigate the effects of weight and durability of a transtibial prothesis modeled on composite materials subjected to loads. The work focused on solid mechanics and modules of failure such as stress, strain, and fatigue. The work was achieved through simulation and tests on the SolidWorks software. Three models were designed and tested, involving some common and composite alternatives that were designated based on the geometry and usage of the part. Some of the materials considered were aluminum, titanium, and carbon fiber, among others. The results obtained were as expected, because the composite alternatives exceeded on the tests, translating into lighter and more durable parts
that complied with the purpose. The outcome of the project is relevant to better understanding the applications and improvements that the composite materials can contribute to daily life activities. Key terms: composite materials, fatigue, solid mechanics, SolidWorks.

Difference Between Ribbed or Dimpled Systems
Ortiz Andujar, Angel J.
The purpose of this design project is to compare the heat transfer and pressure drop phenomena in different cases. The project was carried out with two different models, that is, a channel with ribs and another with dimples with numerical data at different Reynolds Numbers. The numerical study was carried out with the Flow simulation method. The result shows that for both
channels with ribs and dimples there were no significant changes due to the geometry selected in this project. However, the friction factor is comparatively higher for both geometries with the lower Reynol numbers used. Key Terms ⎯ Dimples, Gas turbine, Internal cooling, Ribs.

Do You Stay Connected, or Do You Disconnect?
Lozada Figueroa, Sergio Andrés
This Research Project is based on the lack of knowledge in the area of solar energy in Puerto Rico. Yes, a low percentage of residents have invested in solar systems. The current power grid is not reliable and it’s constantly failing. This prevents
some small businesses to cease operations due to loss of power. The flip side of this is the patients that live in their houses that have medical equipment that requires power constantly to function. This research project shows the benefit of constant and reliable energy to cover all necessities. Key Terms - Fossil Fuel, Renewable Energy, Solar Energy, Solar Panels.

Automated Hydroponic System Design with Minimal Human Interaction
Santos De Jesús, Omar X.
The design of an automated hydroponic system follows from the need of having a system that works through difficult situations. A situation involving a power outage is considered a major problem since the plants in the hydroponic should not be kept without water for more than a couple of hours. If it occurs, the plants will not be able to be harvested and it would result in economic and time loss. Having an automated system would prevent this disaster and would provide the owner some help by showing what it needs. This being more nutrient solution in the reservoir tank, showing the pH level of the solution, or even letting the owner know through phone communication about a power outage. For different types of hydroponics there are different methods of application but they all follow the same needs. For easy application and better understanding of the system, electronic integration with Arduino is used. This design covers the basic needs of the hydroponic system while providing easy manufacturing and integration. Key Terms⎯ Arduino, Hydroponic, Sensor, System.
